High-resolution digital photographs of the retina, optic nerve and macula help in the visualization of anatomic details and for certain conditions, maintain an ongoing accurate record of the anatomy of an abnormality that can be compared with future examinations to look for small changes. Color fundus photographs show the retina as it appears under normal white light, and red-free (high-contrast black and white) fundus photographs are also taken to highlight specific structures such as normal and abnormal blood vessels, areas of bleeding, and the nerve layer of the retina.
Digital fundus photography is rapid, painless, and non-invasive. After dilation, you will be seated comfortably and instructed to place your chin in a chin-rest on the machine. You will then be instructed to look at a target while our skilled photographer takes digital photographs using the necessary filters. The entire process takes only a few minutes. Your doctor will review the results with you in the examination room.
